German CDU/CSU Leader Calls for Transfer of Ukrainian Drone Technologies to Strengthen Defense

Alexander Hoffmann, chairman of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) parliamentary group in the German Bundestag, has called for Ukraine to transfer its cutting-edge drone technologies to Germany. Hoffmann advocates for a formal intergovernmental agreement between Kyiv and Berlin to facilitate the sharing of Ukraine's latest unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developments with the German military.

Strategic Partnership on Defense Technologies

The CSU, allied with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Germany's ruling coalition, believes that Ukraine's military innovations in drones, drone defense and cruise missiles are significant breakthroughs. Hoffmann emphasized that Germany's ongoing support for Ukraine during the conflict should be reciprocated with technological collaboration to strengthen Germany's own defense capabilities.

"We want to obligate Ukraine to share this expertise with us so that together we can become stronger," Hoffmann said, stressing the need for rapid scalability in UAV production if required.

He framed the call as a necessary step to ensure that Germany can enhance its deterrence and defense capacities by integrating Ukrainian innovations. Hoffmann's proposal reflects the growing importance of unmanned systems in modern warfare and the strategic value of leveraging allied technological advances.

Currently, Germany continues to support Ukraine politically and materially; however, Hoffmann argues that direct access to Ukraine's drone technology would provide Germany with a tangible 'dividend' for its assistance.

The proposed intergovernmental agreement would formalize technology transfers and potentially pave the way for joint development and production efforts between German defense industries and Ukrainian innovators. This could accelerate innovation cycles and create new opportunities for venture capital investment and startup growth in the European defense tech ecosystem.
