US President Donald Trump is planning to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un this fall, hoping to resume stalled negotiations over Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program. According to multiple US officials, the meeting is tentatively scheduled for November during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen, China, though formal arrangements have yet to begin.

Implications for Regional Stability and Tech Ecosystem

Trump’s renewed diplomatic overture follows a recent announcement to scale back US-South Korea joint military exercises, coupled with an unprecedented proposal for a peace agreement with North Korea. These moves signal a potential thaw in long-frozen talks but come against the backdrop of a significantly expanded North Korean nuclear arsenal.

“Judging by the hundreds of launch platforms and increasing annual production of plutonium and highly enriched uranium, North Korea’s arsenal likely numbers in the hundreds at this point,” said Jeffrey Lewis, nuclear program expert at Stanford University.

For the technology and startup ecosystem, geopolitical stability in the Asia-Pacific region is a crucial factor affecting venture capital flows and cross-border innovation partnerships. Renewed engagement with North Korea could ease regional tensions, potentially creating a more conducive environment for startups and investors focusing on emerging markets in East Asia.

During Trump’s first term, he met with Kim Jong-un three times, but progress on denuclearization stalled, with North Korea’s nuclear capabilities reportedly growing since. Talks aiming at dismantling Pyongyang’s nuclear infrastructure have faced repeated setbacks, impacting broader diplomatic and economic relations in the region.

In 2025, Trump had expressed interest in meeting Kim again during his Asia tour. North Korea signaled willingness, but scheduling conflicts prevented a prompt summit. The US president also remarked that such a meeting could overshadow his planned summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea.

If successful, a Trump-Kim meeting at APEC could reshape diplomatic dynamics and open new avenues for regional collaboration, including economic and technological initiatives that might benefit startups and investors navigating the complex geopolitical landscape of Northeast Asia.
